The motive of today’s article is to present an in-depth product analysis in the form of an HP Pavilion 15z laptop review. HP is also known as Hewlett-Packard is a computer and laptop manufacturer that first launched its desktops and various computing devices in the 1950s. Since then, they have made quite the mark on the laptop and PC industry and they are known for their innovative and consumer-oriented models of laptop devices. Their laptops come in a wide variety of designs and processing power meant to tackle both personal and professional spheres of your life.
The product we are looking at today comes from HP’s Pavilion series and this includes a range of consumer-oriented models that are best suited for those on somewhat of a budget. You can find entry-level laptops in this range that can be best described as either a low range laptop or a mid-range one so it is quite affordable. That makes it great for students who want a good and reliable laptop that won’t put too much of a dent in their savings.
Just because it is not too expensive does not mean that it isn’t power however as it is fitted with AMD Radeon Vega 3 graphics that will ensure an excellent viewing experience. It also comes fitted with an AMD Ryzen 3 2200U processor that makes it faster. In terms of resolution, it offers a 786p touchscreen display which we think is a little on the lower end. However, with the price this product is placed at, this is a pretty good deal.
A cool thing about this laptop is that it offers the user quite a bit of option especially when it comes to the GPU, its processor, and its memory. You can add in what works best for you. If you want, you can even turn the 15.6-inch screen into a touch display and this makes it so much easier for you to multitask and work with convenience.
First, let’s look at the body and construction of the HP Pavilion 15z:
As we have discussed before, unlike the HP Envy range, the Pavilion series is meant to accommodate lower budgets and this certainly means that there are drastic budget cuts when it comes to key features. Luckily for us, the Pavilion 15z still looks the part of a stylish and sleek HP laptop. It comes with a metallic case that can be bought in a variety of 2-tones. It also weighs around 5 pounds and this means it is quite lightweight and compact.
It doesn’t look cheap which is great for its price tag. Even though it is metallic, the lid is essentially quite matte and has a glossy HP logo embossed on top. What we ardently wish HP would update in this product is their wonderful uni-body construction that is available in their other more expensive ranges. However, we are still quite pleased with what we get!
What connection options does it offer?
One thing that we always look forward to looking over are the connectivity options and this laptop has a decent amount of all the necessary ones! When you look at its body, you will notice that the back and the front side of the laptop do not have any ports, all of those are contained to the sides of the laptop. You will get an HDMI port, a headphone jack, an Ethernet port, and a USB-C port on one side while the other consists of an SD card reader, a power port, and 2 USB ports. This means that you can easily stay connected to all sorts of devices, systems, and servers without the need for additional cables and wires.
What about its battery life and brightness?
Usually, with any laptop that is super compact and easy to lug around, we always consider how long it will last! In our experience, the HP Pavilion 15z manages to grant users a decent 8 hours if they are only engaging in normal daily tasks such as browsing the internet or watching videos on your laptop. However, if you like most users want to engage with multiple and draining tasks such as YouTube streaming or downloading torrents, for example, the battery does not last for a good amount of time.
With heavy use, you might manage 4 to 5 hours of runtime before you will need to charge your device. In today’s day and age when all-day use has become the norm, we do think this is not the most ideal feature. However, if you take care not to overburden the CPU, you can even stretch it out as much as 10 to 12 hours if it is simply transferring data or it is not connected to the internet.
While it might not promise a full day’s worth of web browsing and usage, we do think that if you monitor the brightness levels and stick to less demanding actions, this is a great basic laptop to take to school or university for taking down notes and web searching. The brightness of this product is pretty decent though since it allows you to use it in the daytime as well although you might experience some glare. And again, the higher the brightness levels, the higher the drainage of your battery will be.
How does one set the laptop up?
Usually, with laptops, you won’t have to worry about a complicated setup and this one comes completely set up and ready to use straight out of the box. This means that you will not have to spend a lot of time or effort. Since this is a Windows 10 enabled device, it will take the standard 10 to 15 minutes you need to set up the Windows 10 software. Its processing unit is quick enough to make this a quick procedure.
However, unless you want your laptop to have even more lag than it potentially could, we suggest that you take out the extra time it will take to uninstall and delete any bloatware that it might have pre-installed. This will include HP tools, applications, and an assortment of games that you can honestly do without. Deleting these will clear out the laptop’s memory and increase processing power.
Let’s talk about this HP Pavilion laptop’s display!
This laptop comes in a range of different display and memory options so you aren’t entirely limited. You may select from full HD or variants of 1080p depending on your need. Let’s face it for the price point it comes in at, this device certainly does not offer an exceptionally vibrant and brilliant display. The color reproduction is fine but it is nothing compared to its similarly priced competitors. The brightness is perfect for some ambient light glare indoors but outdoors in the sun is another story altogether. We don’t mind the viewing angles but the screen is harder to see the farther you move away.
Are its webcam and microphone any good?
The HP Pavilion 15z also comes fitted with an integrated webcam that is a great option for all those users who want a laid back yet reliable video calling experience. It offers 720p resolution and that is excellent if you have Skype or Zoom meetings and want to engage with basic software such as Discord. The reason why we wouldn’t recommend this laptop’s webcam for anything more is that the video and images come out looking a little grainy. If however, you want to stream or Vlog or even go live, we would certainly recommend adding an external HD webcam or better yet, upgrade the laptop to a 1080p version.
While the video quality might not be super competitive, the 15z’s audio prowess is the complete opposite! It is one of the best features of this product since the internal and inbuilt Bang &Olufsen speakers enable the user to grant a distortion-free and clear audio experience like never before. This is all thanks to the high-end speaker’s audio boos technology. You can easily blast your favorite tunes and watch your action-packed thrillers at the highest volume settings with absolutely no clamor disrupting your listening experience.
What else does it offer?
In terms of what this laptop is best meant for, we would recommend that users who will routinely engage with the Microsoft Office applications such as Word or those who will engage with simple web surfing should opt for it. While you could certainly push the device’s limitations and engage with heavy-duty software such as Adobe, we would advise against it unless you don’t mind the lag. It might be too slow for professionals at least.
We don’t have to tell our readers to not apply too much force onto a keyboard’s keys, but if you are someone who does that unintentionally, then this might not be the perfect device for you! We do think that adding in a touch screen element will extend the longevity of this device but the keyboard on this device needs to be used with caution.
What are the drawbacks?
We have discussed a few drawbacks and potential limitations that the HP Pavilion 15z laptop comes with. Its less powerful battery does mean that this product might not be without potential flaws, we do think that within its respective price range, you could not expect anything better! Just keep the charger close by and keep an eye on the battery and you should be good.
Another potential drawback has to do with its resolution and display quality. As we have discussed earlier, this product comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution. This means that while it is great for casual movie viewing and to stream YouTube videos, you might not want to purchase this for serious gaming. However, that being said, we have also added that this laptop offers a variety of different configurations for resolution and this means you will very likely be able to find one that fits your preference the best. Also, even if you get the lower display, you can always use its HDMI port to make an external connection to a more HD device.
This device also comes with a year-long warranty which isn’t the best but it will still ensure your laptop is covered for a full year in every regard. With laptop devices, we usually recommend investing in one that offers at least 3 years or more.
We have now reached the end of our informational product review of the HP Pavilion 15z laptop and to sum it all up, we believe that this is certainly the best product for anyone on a budget. If you aren’t too concerned with high-end graphics and processing power and want a stylish laptop that also offers certain smart features such as touch ability, this is your best pick! Of course, the compact and thin body design will be perfect if you are on the move or need to carry this across campus, so there are definite benefits to this model.
In return, you might have to give up on having a very powerful and long-lasting battery. The hope is that you will be able to make it to a power socket in time and since it charged pretty quickly, we won’t fault it too much in that regard. However, as we mentioned before, this is not the fastest laptop from the Pavilion range and if you want to game or run algorithms, you might want to keep looking.
In conclusion, we reiterate, HP Pavilion models such as the 15z might not be super competitive but they do exactly what they claim to! Provide you with a reliable and consumer-driven experience that ensures user-friendly and convenient use for the entire family. In whatever else they might lack in, these devices will return by lasting you for quite some time as they are durable and built to be sturdy.
